Big Oil

Big Oil calls me dumb for resenting their "small" 9% profit margins in recent months and years. Today, a barrel of oil costs ~$50. Compare that to an identical barrel of oil that cost $140 six months ago.

The math: With a 9% profit margin, Exxon would break even on a $140 barrel of oil by selling it for only $127.40. Exxon has consistently profited by about $10 billion per quarter over the last couple years. So Exxon's break even point is $127.40/barrel. Roughly every dollar over $127.40 they charge, they make a billion dollars/quarter.

That means they should lose about $75 billion for every barrel they sell in Q4 08. Will they? Not a chance. They'll still make billions this quarter. How can this be? They've masked profits all along. The 9% profit margin they've suckered the country on is a load of crap.

Boxer scores a 12

[UPDATE] I can't forgive myself if I don't point out that Barbara Boxer uses the McCain suspension as an opportunity to lecture McCain on life from 0:48 seconds into the video. Class act Barbara. I guess we can all rest assured that you've done more for this country in your 68 years than what McCain has done in half that many.

The How-Hard-You've-Fallen-For-Barry-Test

Toobin tries to poo poo the McCain campaign suspension. That’s because the harder you’ve fallen for Barry, the more you hate what McCain has done these past 36 hours.

Toobin scores an 11 out of 10 on the HHYFFBT...

Pundits bore me. I only care what the two candidates have to say

Whether you hate McCain or love him or are somewhere in between, wouldn't you prefer the following McCain quotes to hearing about shivers in Chris Matthews leg? PUT THEM IN FRONT OF AN AUDIENCE AND LET THEM DEBATE!

* That’s how we see this election: country first or Obama first.

* When it comes to cutting taxes for seniors, for working families, for small businesses my opponent didn’t put the hardworking people of this country first. When it came time to support our troops fighting to protect our freedoms and way of life my opponent said he’d never deprive them of the funds they needed to fight and then he voted to do just that. He voted against funding the equipment our troops rely on as they fight to protect us. That’s not putting the men and women of our military first, my friends. When it comes time to reach across the aisle and work with members of both parties to get things done for the American people, my opponent cant name a single occasion in which he fought against his party’s leadership to get something done for the country…that’s not putting the country first.

* We have heard a lot of words from Senator Obama over the course of this campaign. But maybe just this once he could spare us the lectures, and admit to his own poor judgment in contributing to these problems. The crisis on Wall Street started in the Washington culture of lobbying and influence peddling, and he was right square in the middle of it…this is the problem with Washington. People like Senator Obama have been too busy gaming the system and haven’t ever done a thing to actually challenge the system. That’s not country first, that’s Obama first.

* A vote for Senator Obama will leave this country at risk during one of the most severe challenges to America’s economy since the Great Depression. You see, when it comes to growing the economy and protecting you from the corruption of Wall Street and Washington Senator Obama just doesn’t get it.

My Rally Idea

I think McCain and Palin should split up and do simultaneous rallies in different parts in the country. The two rallies could then be linked via teleconferencing with giant TV screens. You know, kinda like how the Dems had one event at Mile High and the other at the Pepsi Center ---except instead of having two events on boths sides of I-25, you have 2 huge rallies going on in different states.

Interesting. That's the same language Obama used against his 20 year pal Jeremiah Wright.

time to file this quote away:

I’m not going to lie to you. I’m going to win this election. I don’t want to just win. I want to give this guy who is running against me a spanking. The reason I do is because he exemplifies the kind of scorched earth, slash and burn negative campaign that has become the custom in Washington and it is the reason why we can’t get anything done.

OBAMA'S DOUBLE STANDARD

So it's OK for Obama to scoff at critics (no wait -- MODERATORS) who question Barack's voting record. He tells Brian Williams how "silly" it is to judge someone on their record. Then today Obama judges McCain's voting record.

Obama's speech

here's what I heard:
Drat you commentators for accusing me of being too black! Oh and by the way, if you think Jeremiah Wright is an unacceptable choice for pastor, you're just not black enough.

Obviously MLK wasn't being black enough when he dreamed of the day people would be judged by the content of their character. Had Martin Luther King been "black enough" he would know that century-old injustices can be a license to preach hate.

Obama's quote of the day

As commander in chief, I will always reserve the right to make sure that we are looking out for American interests.
Gee Barak, let's hope you don't have to tap into this looking-out-for-America "reserve" very often. It's almost as if you're more willing to tap into the ANWR reserves.

(of course this was after McCain decimated him over his comment on re-invading Iraq)

Post Charlie Crist endorsement

Very good news!

Pollster John Zogby: “It is important to note that popular Florida Gov. Charlie Crist endorsed McCain Saturday and campaigned with him Sunday. Sunday alone, McCain had another big day, winning 38% support to Romney’s 31%.

Who REALLY won Florida in 2000

Interesting read from factcheck.org.

Answer: No one seems to know

McCain Derangement Syndrome

David Brooks just used the phrase McCain Derangement Syndrome. I love it.

So I Google it to see just how many hits it has: 33,000! I know that's a big increase from the last time I Googled it. Just don't know how big. But this is certainly interesting! McCain Derangement Syndrome stands on its own in comparison to Bush Derangement Syndrome.

UPDATE:
Had Mark Levin didn't read my blog this morning he'd know just how prevalent McCain Derangement Syndrome is. But alas, he's never heard of it:

I strongly oppose McCain's nomination, but I don't hate him. And I had not heard this phrase "McCain Derangement Syndrome" until Brooks dropped it into his column.
Mark, this is the curse of the "professional conservative" Pay attention.

Duncan Hunter tips his hand

Maybe McCain, maybe Huckabee. Definitely NOT Mitt Romney.

Take that conservative elites.

Romney steps in it... BADLY

Ankle Biting Pundits
Yesterday, on “Fox News Sunday,” using his most up-to-date talking points, Romney claimed to be an outside-the-Beltway candidate, by contrast with John McCain, “who has been in Washington all [his] life.”

Romney might have paused before charging McCain with being a prisoner of Washington. In the late 1960s and early 70s, while Romney was a missionary in France and a law and business student at Harvard, McCain wasn’t living the good life here in the nation’s capital. He was “tied up at the time,” as he once reminded the audience in a Republican candidates’ debate, tied up and perhaps reciting to himself lines from “Invictus.”

If McCain wasn’t a man in Vietnam, then Romney has never owned a pair in his entire life.

Daily Kos For Mitt Romney!

Obama and Edwards aren't on the ballot and they know Mitt will lose the general. McCain is enjoying a lead in Michigan. This would be a sad day indeed if they can pull this one off.

Fun with exit polls

Which ONE of these four candidate qualities mattered most in deciding how you voted today?

Says what he believes(29%)
John McCain 53%
Mitt Romney 13%
Ouch!

McCain wins New Hampshire!

McCain pulled a Joe Namath when he vowed to win New Hampshire two months ago. At 16%, he was running a distant third. He had half the supporters home town hero Mitt Romney had. In the end, McCain wooed a record turnout to help catapult him to a 6% win. Had it been a closed primary, he still would have won. The phoenix from Arizona rose from the ashes.

It was beautiful.

Tuesday, January 08, 2008

WSJ Tips it's hand

Wall Street Journal:
It is cruel to compare the senator to most of his Republican competitors.

Beautiful.

Tuesday, January 01, 2008

David Brooks: Romney can't win.

This one is sure to send ripples throughout the blogosphere:

money quote: (is this just because I watched 'Swingers' last night?)

The leaders of the Republican coalition know Romney will lose. But some would rather remain in control of a party that loses than lose control of a party that wins.

Mitt has outspent every other candidate -Republican and Democrat- combined in Iowa and is STILL weaker in an Iowa general match-up than McCain and Huckabee. For weeks elites have turned a blind eye to Romney's electability problem and yet they play the FUD card all day long on Huckabee's electability.

Now it all clicks...

UPDATE:
Andrew Sullivan eerily agrees.
